The first thing most visitors do when they arrive in Fredericks-burg, is stop at the Fredericksburg Bakery at 141 E. Main Street for some of the freshly-baked pastries, breads and sausage rolls. (Nothing like a little energy food to fuel a full day of shopping.) The charming stone building was built in 1889; is the oldest business building in Fredericksburg; and has been operating as a bakery since 1917. It's breathtaking.
The upstairs of the
building is one of the town's finest and most popular bed and breakfast inns.
Who wouldn't want to wake up to the smells of a bakery wafting up the
stairs? The entire upstairs may be reserved by one family or by a
group of friends. Or, it can be rented as three separate and private
bedrooms with a spacious common area. The living area of’ this historic
establishment consists of two large rooms with comfortable chairs, sofas and
tables, and a bright spacious kitchen. Here you’ll find a selection
of the bakery's famous pastries, breads and jellies with coffee, teas and
juice. There is also a front porch with a picturesque view of Main
Street, and a back porch that overlooks a lovely courtyard
All of the rooms are
beautifully decorated with antique furniture and accessories, featuring
colorful, handmade quilts on the beds as well as adorning the walls.
The owners, Mike and Patsy Penick are Fredericksburg locals who
absolutely love being part of their town's exciting business community.
Patsy and daughter Destiny were once featured on the cover of Redbook
magazine as descendants of the original settlers of Fredericksburg. Patsy’s
maiden was Durst---the first owners of the historic site, Cross Mountain.
