THE COOK'S COTTAGE
"Deep in the heart of Texas,
historic Fredericksburg, Texas, to be exact, lies a magical cottage
surrounded by wildflowers. Cook's Cottage one-room guesthouse is one of
those rare places where you feel like the outside world doesn't exist, let
alone matter. There is no phone, no television, no VCR - but owner Patsy
Swendson makes sure that everything you really need (and more) to have the
most decadently romantic time is right at your fingertips. When Patsy, who
hosted her own cooking show for more than 20 years and has written over 45
cookbooks, built the cottage, she set out to create an experience that was
entirely different from the traditional bed and breakfast. The
architectural details are charming; mismatched antique windows, distressed
ceiling tiles in the bay window, Adirondack chairs on the screened-in
porch, a copper sink, a slate floor. The bed, tall enough for the princess
and the pea, is indulgent in every way, with a down comforter, enough
pillows to get lost in, and Egyptian cotton sheets. But it is the bathtub
that is the centerpiece of the room. The two-person whirlpool is nestled
in river rocks. To get into it, you step through the small waterfall.
Candles are hidden among the smooth gray stones, along with herbed bath
oils and fresh roses. Patsy's guest book is filled with comments as
exuberant as a "little slice of heaven," but this one line really seems to
sum up the experience: "She said Yes!" "
